Heroes star Hayden Panettiere took a break from filming to eat lunch with a friend in Hollywood yesterday. The 18-year-old, who plays Claire in the sci-fi series, ate at Le Pain Quotidien before visiting a few furniture stores.

Wearing bright red lipstick, Panettiere beamed for photographers. But perhaps she would not look so happy if she had read the mixed reviews that the new series of Heroes has received since it aired last night on BBC 2.
After being blown away by the first series, fans were left disappointed with a sketchy, muddled second season that felt it was going nowhere, fast.

Thankfully, the writers strike in the US meant the Heroes team could scrap series two halfway through and start again. And last night British audiences watched the first episode of the much-anticipated third season of the show which follows the lives of characters who possess superhuman powers.
So far the reaction has been mixed.

One blog said fans will be 'relieved to know that it's back on form and full of action - at last'. And Metro's TV critic Keith Watson agreed that the show 'had got its bite back'.

The Scotsman's Andrea Mullaney concurred that things were moving in the right direction but maintains that 'it feels like the show is just making things up as it goes along'.

If only Hayden, like her Heroes characters, could see what the future holds?

Jessica Alba and Hayden Panettiere have teamed up to star in a new satirical video for Declare Yourself, encouraging young people to vote.

Alba plays a faux home-shopping cable channel host who is selling "The Muzzler 2008," a Hannibal Lecter-like mask that symbolizes failing to exercise the right to vote. (She wore the same mask in this recent Declare Yourself ad.)

In the video (above), Panettiere models the mask, emphasizing its ability to stifle people's vote.

90210's Tristan Wilds also appears in the video.

"Jessica and Hayden have an amazing ability to connect with young adults," Declare Yourself executive director Marc Morgenstern said in a statement. "Behind all the humor of the PSA lies a very serious message of what it actually means to sit out the election and effectively silence oneself."

Hayden declared herself a bit of a diva at a special Declare Yourself party in Hollywood. The Heroes actress - who was supposed to be the evening's VIP spokeswoman, there to encourage young people to vote - kept the press waiting for over two hours.

When she finally arrived she only talked to a handful of reporters about the cause before opting to go inside and catch up with her friends. Shrugging her shoulders, the most she said on her way into the party was: "I'm a democrat."

Without her giant Yves Saint Laurent shoes it would have been hard to even spot the small star's arrival on the red carpet outside The Greendoor club in Hollywood. Wearing black skinny Fendi trousers and a sparkling MLH top the actress looked classy, if a bit plain.

Despite somewhat failing to give out the message that youngsters in the US should vote she seemed more prepared to talk about herself.

When asked about America's stalling economy, sounding slightly holier-than-thou the actress said we should all be more green to save money: "I never leave the TV on.

"Every time I leave the house I put the heat up so the air con won't go on, because why are you cooling your house when you're not there?

"It's completely unnecessary and it's such a waste. I was raised recycling, I always recycle."
